January 2011

The Fridge Door is a miscellaneous collection of news and piffle sent out to folks who have, at some point, used Artography
to design a web site or at least enquired about such things. We try to keep it light hearted, not even remotely
politically correct and possibly a little off the wall. If you've got anything you'd like to see or want included - ask!

Competitive Web Mastering...
             ...or search engine marketing

What is it? Not much! Just how wrong can you be! In fact it's nearly as wrong as assuming search engine or web marketing is simply search engine optimisation. Actually it's drawing together on and off site search optimisation techniques and making them work together.

Everyone has heard of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) - we've all had the phone call, received the email or dipped our finger in the water one way or another. Some of us have even spent the money - usually with little effect. No one can guarantee results - that is a fact - start believing it!

There are many companies out there, both on-shore and off-shore who will make wild claims and charge extortionate sums and fundamentally do very little - marketing needs joined up thinking, you need to watch your competitors, identify your customers and target them. That means running adverts, use localisation to your advantage. Make sure your homepage sends the right message - not just to people but to search engine spiders. Do you have or use a blog, MySpace or other social networking - then make sure you're using it to the full. If you're launching a new product or service is it worth a specialist website to promote it?

Promotion of a site is neither science nor art yet it is at the same time both! The science is to try something to see if it works, the art is predicting when your competitor changes strategy or the search engine changes the algorithm - and what to do about it! That is a full time job.

Start the New Year with some joined up thinking and start to bring your marketing together. Our customised on and off site SEO service will specifically address your needs and challenges. We start with "cherry picked" improvements that will deliver the best initial return on investment.  The trick is making your web site work as hard as possible for you...

No, it won't be cheap but it needed cost the earth either. One client was spending £3,000 per month on Google Pay Per Click - he's now spending less than £1,000 per month yet his turnover (and profit) has more than doubled!  The average spend is £200 - £300 per month...

...and it really does work! Call and see what we can do!

Link building using directories...

I'm often asked what all the fuss is about when Web Directories, Linking and Google rankings are mentioned - it's fairly basic really, if Google sees lots of links into your site using the phrase "Swimming Pools" then Google assumes that that in the world of swimming pools your site is important and therefore lists you higher!

Directories are a fairly quick and reliable way of increasing the links into your site and as such can be pretty valuable - however this is fairly labour intensive work so we cheat and get it done offshore! Call us or see here for more about: Link building using directories (Special offer during January!)

Email Marketing

Talking about web marketing and SEO don't forget about email marketing - when it's done properly (and inside the anti-spam laws) it really is a brilliant system for keeping in touch with clients and can be made to work.

My problem is we've been so busy since the last email we haven't had time to do much about it. The only thing I can definitely say is that it does work! The last "Fridge Door" was sent out to 106 clients and by Wednesday of the same week I had 4 orders for new sites from existing customers plus changes to others!

If it works for me it can work for you.....

Medical Studies Have Shown:

It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting medical studies:

  • The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
  • The French eat a lot of fat and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
  • The Japanese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
  • The Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
  • The Germans drink a lot of beers and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.

CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you like.  Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

As a senior citizen was driving down the motorway, his car phone rang. Answering, he heard his wife's voice
urgently warning him, "Herman, I just heard on the news that there's a car going the wrong way on the M4. Please be careful."
"Hell," said Herman, "It's not just one car. It's hundreds of them!"

Puppy's Progress

Greetings!  Happy Birthday to me!
(Written on Xmas Day)

I'm one today! That's a whole year old and getting to the end of the beginning of my training, if you see what I mean! I've had lots of friends to show me what to do - from Katie the old lady and Ruby my surrogate mum who have both been with me since I came to Reading to live plus Jazz, Rory and Maggie who have been passing playmates and chief trouble makers! (Only kidding!)

Since I've been here I've had to learn how to walk nicely, how to come when called, how to be "house trained" and all sorts of other good stuff. But in amongst it all I've also had some fairly serious fun too!

If you'd like to help puppies like me and blind people too then please consider the Guide Dogs Sponsor a Puppy Scheme.

Does You Site Have Heroin?

Heroin, it has been said, is the ultimate product. Why? Because people will crawl through the sewers, beg, borrow and steal to buy it. In the non-drug world, there are very few products that can be classified as having heroin's appeal.

So where is the Heroin in a website - it has to be the content keep it relevant, keep it up to date and keep it in tune with what you customers want or need and make sure it fulfils their expectations.

To do this you must make sure you know your target audience and then build your site to fit their expectations. Once you’ve got their interest then regular updates will be needed to keep them coming back. You can help with newsletters and email updates and it’s really not so difficult – spend an hour a week reviewing what has happened in the last week and what you plan to make happen in the next week. Then shout about it!
